Vampires. Bloodsuckers. You’ve probably watched the movies and cringed along with everyone else
when the monster kidnaps a beautiful virgin, (they’re always virgins, aren’t they?), and slowly sinks his
fangs into her white, unspoiled throat, at the jugular vein, and drinks of her lifeforce. If he drains her
completely and she dies, her loved ones bury her and that’s that. But, if the vampire takes her to the brink
of death and stops, well then, three to four days later she begins to take on a terrible thirst that only blood
can satisfy. She has become a vampire herself.

You remember how many ways there are to kill Dracula, or any vampire for that matter? Catch him asleep
and drive a wooden stake through his heart. Behead him. Burn the head and body and scatter the ashes
Expose him to the rays of the sun. Yeah, I’ve seen those movies and I’ve fantasized about them. I’ve even
written a few stories for the horror magazines. Thing was, I always assumed that the monster was only a
tale that had been devised by Bram Stoker who had modeled his creation after the life of the once
Transylvanian king Vlad Tepes over a hundred years ago.

So, imagine my surprise when I found out that vampires really do exist.

Vampires are what they are due to a virus called Porphyria that is spread through the blood by casual
contact with someone whose blood is infected. However, modern vampires are quite different from the
fictional ones.

You are no doubt aware that the Bible tells us, first,”the life is in the blood,”          ( Deut. 12: 23 ). The
same text also tells us not to “eat” or ingest, blood, which is the life of a creature, be it animal or human.
Another text provides us with reasons why we should not eat rare steaks or other meats heavy with blood:
(Leviticus 17: 10 – 14). A great number of people today believe that all the health directives of the Old
Testament vanished with Yahshua’s instigation of the New Covenant. But, as the New Testament fully
reveals, all the rules were not done away. I have always tried to go by the Bible’s health advice. Psychic
Edgar Cayce also advised that the Bible is a primary book to follow for health.

It was in Chicago that I had a friend who was aware of the fact that I intended to become a writer. He also
knew of my fascination with things from the world of the occult, particularly werewolves and vampires.

When this friend said that he knew a few vampires I laughed. But, then, when he introduced me to a very
beautiful brunette and she was holding a small bottle (about 4 ounces) of what she called blood … I
began to wonder. The lady turned up the bottle and drank the stuff down in front of me. Thinking that she
was drinking fruit juice, watered down ketchup, or some other fake drink, I asked her how she got the
blood and it turned out that my friend had willingly donated his own. That’s how modern vampires live, you
see. Vampires are driven by their sickness to thirst for blood due to the fact that porphyria kills active cells
in the blood. Because their birth blood is almost dead, they must continually renew it. They make friends
of men or women who are all alone in the world without very many close friends, and give them affection,
attention, and sex. Then, when the new friend becomes loyal they teach them to serve their needs.
Usually as voluntary “bleeders” who provide anywhere from a few ounces of blood each week to a pint or
more a month, depending on how much porphyria progresses in their bodies.

According to this vampire, and three others she eventually introduced me to, the disease can be
conquered through the ministration of medical attention. However, many of the vampires, most of them in
fact, prefer to remain infected because they actually grow to like the taste of blood. They form cliques, or
clubs, and occasionally they bring their dates to meetings held in someone’s home or, when they are
seeking kicks, deserted warehouses where they party down and exchanges partners who willingly bleed
for them.

Modern vampires do not boast the fangs of the movie types. They usually carry little silver or gold plated
razor blades in plastic containers on chains around their necks. When the vampire finds a willing bleeder,
the razor blade is used to open a small vein in his or her wrist, or on the inside of the thigh, or on a
shoulder. They like to place the cuts in locations that aren’t easily seen by the public. As the cut bleeds,
the vampire covers it with their mouth and sucks their fill. Finished, they cover the cut with a band aid and
allow it to heal. Once a bleeder is found and convinced to volunteer blood periodically, the vampire and
the bleeder become very close. Sometimes they marry and live together for life.

As in the movies, there exists vampire societies, usually found in the major cities of the land. The lady I
interviewed said that there were literally hundreds of the blood suckers in America alone. World wide,
there may be thousands. Now, with the advent of computers, and E-mail, it is very easy for them to keep
in touch with one another.

These modern blood suckers are not immortal. They live normal lives, work at normal jobs, and die like
every other mortal. Interestingly, they do not try to draw blood from anyone who has not given their
permission. Usually, they are very law abiding.

However, now and then there exists the aberrent vampire who stalks an unwary human, grabs him, and
forcefully bleeds him. But, the numbers of these are tiny. One in a thousand, for example. But, now and
again a police blotter will carry the story of a bum or vagrant found in a back alley with his throat ripped
out. These are usually blamed on wild animals.

Thanks for reading. It is my aim to inform you of the monsters and  other things that live in the shadows of
our world, undetected by average people.
