"Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him,
and will sup with him, and he with me." There are many misconceptions about what is called "the door within".
Yahshua rebuked the priests who neither went within themselves, nor allowed others to do so. We have many
other ancient cultures which direct us internally to the realms of "heaven".
What, exactly, are they talking about? Is it one specific "place" accessible within us or several layers of possible
locations? Are we talking about meditation here or something else? These and other connected subjects are
what we will discuss here each month. Some things you may not see the connection, but later, hindsight will
make it clear.
Let's begin with a commonly misunderstood phrase. "Surrender" For most people, surrender implies a defeatist
attitude, to not rise to a challenge, giving up, a lethargic addressing of life around you, or to just "put up with"
whatever happens. To cease making plans or initiating actions.
True surrender is something entirely different. It is the simple but profound act of yielding to, rather than
opposing, the flow of life. You can only experience life as it actually occurs. One moment at a time. A moment
before, you are anticipating it.
A moment later, you are remembering it. To surrender is to accept each present moment unconditionally and
without reservation. It is to relinquish inner resistance to what IS. Inner resistance is to say no to what is,
through negative emotions or judgements. These are mind identifications which busy us and remove us from
the experience of the moment and the flow of life.
Surrender is a purely inner phenomenon. It does not mean that you cannot take action and change the
situation. In fact it is not an overall which you need to surrender. It is only in each moment that you must remain
open, but by surrendering to what "is" in each moment you find an acceptance to life situations and are able to
act with positive force.
For instance, if your car gets stuck in the mud... Do you "surrender" to the mud? Do you even sit there and tell
yourself that there is some divine reason why you must be stuck in the mud? No, but you do not judge it in any
other way, either. You are simply stuck in the mud. Without judgement about what is, you are free to go about
the business of doing whatever it takes to get out of the situation. You narrow your attention down to the
present moment and are free to give it your full active force without labeling it in any way.
With no judgement of what "is" you have not produced your own obstacle, your resistance. Resistance to what
"is" has body and mind repercussions. It sets up a rigidity and over time settles into our entire being, and we
thought it was old age. A lifetime of resistive thoughts to what is, as we tend to do to propel our lives foreward,
results in the various dis-eases of our shared world.
By refraining from labeling what "is" we are actively training ourselves and can begin to exercise the free will
that we have. Once you begin practicing surrender, you will find that the phrase "free will" also takes on a
different meaning. The choices that are available to you are amazing. Can you even choose when to think and
when to not? An addiction is something that we cannot stop. Are we addicted to our own minds? How, then, can
we "be still"? How can we hear the knocking on our inner door? While we are talking about “how”…
How does this talk of surrender have anything to do with finding the “door” within each of us?
We’ll be talking about that and more next time...
