A prevailing thought among our people is that the Founding Fathers established America as a CHRISTIAN
nation. Unfortunately, that is not entirely true. Most of the men we call Founding Fathers were, in fact,
Deists.

What is a Deist? The New American Webster’s Dictionary defines Deism as, simply, a “belief in God.”
Without doubt, all the men who put the nation together were believers in “God.” Some of them were, no
doubt, Christian. But, history shows that the most influential among the Founding Fathers were, in fact,
Deists.

Deism, which was widespread among educated Americans of the Revolutionary War period of history in
America, was a philosophy that acknowledged Yahweh as Creator and Ruler of the Universe, but
conceived of Him as remaining aloof from humanity, not communicating with mankind, and having little
interest in human religious rites. Deists generally admired “Jesus”, (Yahshua), (as did Jefferson and
others), but thought little of him as the divine Son of God, preferring to believe that he “came in the flesh”
to demonstrate heavenly Law to mankind as a special messenger.

Unlike Jefferson and Paine, who spoke out on their views, Geo. Washington rarely discussed his own
beliefs, even in conversation with his guests at dinner. Washington believed in keeping his views to
himself, even though he was a member of the Episcopalian Church. He spoke about the Almighty using
abstract terms, such as “Providence” and “The Creator,” which he used in conversation as well as in
public addresses.

Washington, however, was a firm believer that religion was needed to hold civilization together. He
believed that morality cannot be achieved among men without a sense of religion. He said, “Reason and
experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle.”
