February 2007
Let’s learn a bit more about astrology. What is the zodiac and where did it come from?
Early civilizations turned to the heavens for guidance. Above the Earth could be seen the Sun, Moon, and a vast
array of stars. Moving "stars" were eventually recognized as planets. In man’s early days, those who were tracking
the Sun’s cycle began by observing all the constellations through which the Sun passed. Soon they discovered a
pattern. Year after year, the Sun would trace a circular path in the heavens through the same series of
constellations. This circular path became known as the zodiac. We now know it is the Earth that is moving around
the Sun, but from our perspective it appears as though the Sun is moving.
Leo is the 5th sign, July 23-August 22, and is a fire sign ruled by the Sun, which gives these people much energy.
Their key phrase is "I will." Their sunny dispositions inspire the affection of many friends and admirers. Even though
they are usually full of enthusiasm and ambition, they can exhibit a lazy streak. If a situation offers little fun or glory,
they might take the easy way out. Another weakness these people will sometimes display is stubbornness, which
comes out when their egos are involved. Wounded pride. They may cling to a wrong viewpoint or a bad relationship,
because it is difficult for them to admit being wrong.
The symbol of this sign is the lion, bestowing majesty, power, and dignity. Leos’ roots are in the home and in their
own personal independence. They have the need to produce children both of their minds and their bodies. Leo
rules the heart, thus these people give of themselves generously in time, money and knowledge. Leos function well
in positions of responsibility and management. They are practical, philosophical, and spiritual.
Virgo is the 6th sign, August 23-September 22, and is an earth sign ruled by Mercury. The hub of their universe is
work. Virgos can become great scholars, constructive critics, excellent editors; all exacting perfection. Their key
phrase is "I analyze." Its symbol is a virgin with sheaves of grain in her hand. The sheaves portray the wisdom that is
harvested in the fields of experience.
These people like to bring order out of confusion. Since they value work and respect it, they will often help a friend
find employment but will seldom raise a finger to help someone who has difficulties because of a refusal to work.
Virgo rules health, therefore, these people must learn not to exhaust their body energies by worrying, fretting, or
overworking. Virgo bodies reject all artificial food or medicine. Food is quite harmful to them when they are angry or
in extreme anguish. Nevertheless, this sign has a natural physical resistance to disease. If they can keep
themselves out of the clutches of disease, they can become healers of the sick themselves. These people are at the
height of their power in careers related to service. They are capable of great self-denial if they believe their work is
worthy of it. At times because of their extreme analyzing, they have a narrowness of outlook and will be unable to
focus on anything except their work. Another downfall is excessive spending. For a time, they are able to go on
saving "sprees," but it never seems to last.
A Virgo is concerned with the development of potential. They are inclined to measured pace and practical purpose,
driven to strive, not for glory, but for perfection.
Until next time…

There are many components to each of our birth charts. Besides our sun sign we have all the rest of the planets and other signs existing in some area of our chart at the moment of our birth. Our lattitude and longetude also alters things, as well as the relativity of all these things to each other. We are as individual as snowflakes, and as joined as snow. In this column we will look at the "big" picture in general.
